Learning Control

Sam was twelve and had been controlling her powers better than I expected. Monthly visits with trusted ex-council sorceresses did her good. She could get away for a weekend and be around those who truly understood what she was going through. Lilah and I had become a bit distant, we both worked alot and Sam's magick training was emotionally draining. We were still sleeping in the same bed and she never smelled of someone's cologne so I didn't worry. I'd taught Sam small spells for protection. I knew the dreaded thirteeth year was coming and that would encase hell. At thirteen those who have magicks get a bit of a boost. Then at eighteen their powers full develop. Considering how strong Sam was already I was a bit worried at what her upcoming birthday, specifically a week away, would bring.

Over the last twelve years Sam had gotten better with learning to control her powers.Over this time period I'd started working more at the office again, and pulling ore than oe all nighter there. I'd also been spending more time with Roger and his boyfriend Jerry.

I came home from another shopping spree with Roger. I walked into the house with him, and set my bags own on the sofa. "Sam,Wes?" I wasn't sure if either of them were home. While I waited for a reply I cheked the answering machine for messages. roger was busy unpacking bagWs.

there was one message on the machine from my co-worker Damien. "Hey Lilah, I as just calling to see if we were still getting together for dinner tonight. Well give me a call and let e know, you have my number I'll be waiting bye"

Drained from an exorcism I dragged my feet as I walked into our home. I'd been up all day and ended with spell that left me numb in my fingertips. It was a powerful spirit and I passed out right after the spell was completed. I knew I was getting a bit too old for things of that much energy but it wouldn't take much to recharge myself considering I knew many Wiccas with phenomenal healing spells.

I'd come in through the back door because I parked my work truck in the guest garage. I paused when I heard a man's voice on the answering machine.
I felt my exhaustion fade away as rage took its place. I tried to control my anger as I rounded the corner to see Roger and Lilah.

I wasn't going to give away that I'd heard the message, I decided to play things smooth."Hello Li, Roger.", I nodded at them before heading to the stairs. I need a bath and a book desparately.

I shut the machine off, just as Wes Came in from the back half of the house. He said hello to Roger and I, then headed to the stairs. I left Roger to unpack, while I followed Wes. I went upstairs and walked into the bed room after him. "How was work?" He hadn't done his usual routine that he had after work, which made me know that something was up. I walked over to him.

I mover closer, so my arms went around his neck after he'd taken his shirt off. "Well then maybe it's time you put in for an actual desk job or something" I suggested before kissing him. After we broke apart for some air, I started to trail kisses down along his jaw line and neck, while one of my hands found it's way to the waist band of his jeans and tugged on them a little.

I looked at him as he sighed and said no, in what for Wes was the nicest way possible. I thought about trying to push, but lately that route hasn't gotten me anywhere. All it's done is make him annoyed with me, and me overly frustrated. So I decided to leave him to his stupid books. I moved away from him, and turned to leave, to go back downstairs. "Fine I'll be downstairs with Roger" I turned and walked downstairs. Roger had finished unpacking all of our purchases and was now sitting on the sofa flipping tv channels. "If I was for whatever reason suddenly undesireable to men, you'd tell me right?" I asked him while I sank onto the sofa next to him, and laid against him.

For the last month or two I hadn't been in the mood for sex. My co-workers teased me, declaring that my workaholic attitude was due to me not getting any."I'm going to take a shower.", I muttered as she walked out.

Roger chuckled.'Course I would tell you Cupcake.', he pushed her hair back.'Is Wes being a party pooper again?', he sighed.'Maybe he can't get it up anymore...'

I sighed. "I swear I don't know what's with him lately. Normally I don't really have to press the issue, and when I do I always win, but lately even that's not working." I smacked Roger's arm at his implication that Wes was getting too old. "He's not that old, besides if that were the problem I'd like to think I'd know." I sighed again. "I just wish I knew what was going on with him lately." I looked up enough to glance at the clock. "I guess I should call Damien back.." I reached over him for the cordless phone. "Have you seen Sam at all since we've been back?" I asked as I started to dial Damien's number.

"You said he's been turning it down...who knows maybe he can't use his tool anymore. You might want to get him checked out.", Roger watched Lilah pick up the phone.'She's prolly in her room listening to music or something.'

Getting out the shower I wrapped a towel around my waist and walked into the bedroom. I too wondered about the lack of desire I felt towards Lilah. Maybe I was getting old faster than I thought. Unwrapping my towel I looked down at myself."I can't be that old.", I chuckled before pulling on some clothes.

Sam was sitting in her room with her headphones as loud as possible. Her mother constantly told her not to have the volume up so high but she didn't care. If something happened to her hearing she'd just use a spell to fix it. She had known of her powers since she was a toddler, knew about magick before numbers and colors. It was a part of her. At times in school she felt angry at all the other kids, they were normal. A mood swing could literally bring down their home. She wished to be rid of them. Reading her father's spell book she hoped to find the right one.

I looked at Roger and shut the phone off for a second. "Roger you know I love you, but you're wrong there has to be some other reason, like he's loosing his mind or something. I mean who knows what things he ends up doimng to himself out there at rat infested run down office building he calls work." I wasn't going to force Wes to go see the doctor unless I had no other choice, and right now I still had options.

I got up off the sofa. "I'm gonna go check on Sam." I walked up to her room and knocked on the door. "Sam!" I had to yell her name since I could hear the music from her headphones through the damn door.

I decided I'd try to work on the lack of sexual satifaction from Wes later tonight after my business dinner with Damien.

Ignoring Lilah Sam turned her music up more as she read throught the manual. She knew there was some kind of binding spell. She'd overheard the Wiccas discussing a time when they had to take someone's powers.

After I was dressed I headed to the office to overlook a few cases. I could hear the blaring guitars as I made my way down the hall. Obviously Sam was home. I also told her I'd rather her play the music out of the hundred dollar surround system she had in her room. At least that way she wouldn't be damaging her ears so quickly. I shrugged, besides if she harmed her hearing she or I could fix it.

I couldn't take it anymore I tried the handle, only to find it locked. I banged on her bedroom door as loud as humanly possible. "Samantha, open the damn door!" I yelledhoping she'd hear it through that din she called music. I knew that Wes had been teaching her how to control magick, but lately they'd both been relying on magick as a quick fix for everything and it was begining to piss me off, more so than my other problem with Wes.

Hearing her mother bang Sam turned her headphones off with a sigh. Waving her hand the door unlocked and opened.'Yes mother?' When she was in her agigated mood she would call her parents mother and father.

I chuckled to myself hearing Lilah banging on the door. She was so damn confrontational sometimes, an obvious source for Sam's temper.

I sighed in relief when she finally opened the door. I walked into the room and narrowed my eyes at the way she sounded too much like Wesley's parents. That was when I noticed the magick books scattered all over the place. "What are you doing with your father's books? You know how he gets about his books Sam." I pick the one closest to her up and looked at it, then slammed it shut. "Why are you looking through spell books, and dark magicks?" I was begining to wonder just what sort of monthly trips Wes took Sam on. We'd told her a thousand times not to try anything thing big, or darlky dangerous ever.

'I was bored so I decided to grab a few.', she replied as she put the one in her lap on the bed and replaced it with her laptop.'Besides, it's not like I carry any of these out. If they can drain father so quickly they'd kill me since I have no experience. Besides, he said there's no harm in looking.' With a snap the music that she was listening to on her headphones came out of her stereo speakers but alot softer.'Is there anything else?', she asked without looking up from the computer screen.

The silence was disturbed by guitar and drum intrumentals. Sam often listened to music without lyrics, said it helped her concentrate. As my eyes grazed the shelf I realized a few of my books were missing. With an annoyed sigh I got up and headed for Sam's room.

With a frustrated sighed I walked over and shut off her stereo, which seemed to get her attention. She was about to raise a hand to turn it back on and my eyes narrowed. "Don't even think about it." I looked at her. "Now wanna try telling me exactly why you stole your father's books? And without the practiced line this time." I didn't care if Wes had told her that she could look through his books, but I was guessing these weren't the ones he'd meant. While I waited for an answer, I could hear Wes moving around in the office. I tried not to get to pissed at Sam knowing how powerful she already was, but she still had to have some discpline, otherwise she'd be throwing people around like rag dolls, when she didn't want to listen.

Sam inwardly cursed herself for allowing such a stupid mistake. She didn't mean to pit them against each other. However, she did know that they barely spoke except for the 'how was your day' and goodbye kiss. Their lack of communication helped her get what she wanted most of the time.

"Why did you take these books Samantha?", I asked as I moved closer. They were some of the most powerful books in my possession. One was the source of the exorcism I'd performed earlier."What do you need with binding spells?"

Sam sighed and looked at them. "I took the books because I thought they'd help me find a way to get rid of my powers. Okay? I just want to be normal, like everybody else. I'm sick of being the odd girl that's around when 'accidents' happen. So I thought one of the books might have a spell to take away my freakishness."

I sighed as I leaned against her dresser. "Sam you could've just said something instead of sneaking around." Sam looked at her mother. "Oh yea that would've worked, because you two talk so much these days"

My first instinct was to be angry at the comment she made but it was true. Lilah and I hadn't had a real conversation for months. Glancing at Lilah I saw her look down momentary before fixing an aggrevated look at Sam.

Whenever Wes got like this and told her no she always tried to get my help in changing her mind, it was her way of playing the 'I'm your little princess, only darling baby' stick, which most times worked, but not this time.I watched Wes start to leave.

When her mother didn't help her out, and her father was walking out with the books she just lost it. Next thing they knew the books hit the floor with a thud, and Wes was laying up on the celing.

One second I was walking out Sam's room the next I'm on the ceiling. The force of the action knocked the wind out of me. For a moment I was too stunned to react. Once I got my bearing I let myself down. I was too furious to even speak.

I watched in stunned silence as Wes ended up on the celing. It didn't take him long to get himself back down after having the wind knocked out of him. I was furious. I could feel my ears burning and I knew they must have been red. I've had to fight with my powers but being the aim at teenage angst was different, especially in my own home. Hearing Lilah's words I calmed a little and stop speaking. With a snap the books were in a stack in my hands. I fumed out of her room and back to my study. Sam had never seen her father so angry and jumped when he slammed the first door. She hadn't meant to put him on the ceiling but once again her emotions took hold of her powers. Even more reason for her to want to be rid of them.
'Well now you can go to your 'business' dinner', she muttured under her breath.

The cold wind over my skin helped me calm down as I sped through the streets. I knew exactly which ones to take to avoid traffic and police. I was fed up with it all; the distance in my marriage, my daughter's disregard, and the slow business of my job.

I pulled into the parking lot of my old friend Maria. We'd gone to the Academy together and she was a big magick support when it came to Sam. 'Dinner with another man, speeding off on a motorcycle, and not talking to each other...oh yea that's working things out.', Sam retorted. She would be out with friends more than she was at home. Her parents were never the overly affection couple, not from what she saw at least. Constantly spending nights with friend's families, joining on weekend trips Sam saw the love and enjoyment of the simple things. Of course she loved her own wealthy life but it was a breath of fresh air to get away from her perfectly manicured home with offered many empty room and way too many cocktail parties.

Damien picked up the phone with a smile. He'd had his eye on Lilah since the first time she stepped through the doors of the firm. Being invited to join her budding business of law he knew she must been attracted to him to.'Hello Lilah, what time shall we meet at the restaurant?'. He knew of her husband but Damien figured it was a minor detail. Being the son of Satan give one certain abilities and he always got what he wanted.

"It's not Lilah...", I sighed as I shoved my hands into my pockets."Samantha is going through that phase pre-thirteen; she hates her powers. I don't know what else to do."

I smiled when Damien picked up the phone. "I can be there in an hour" I told him. I'd already started to get ready just before I called him.

I managed to make it through traffic and walked into the restuarnt to find Damien already at a table with wine chilling. "I'm not too late am I? I ran into some traffic, and had to deal with a problem at home first." I explained as I sat down across from him, and the waiter poured me a glass of wine.

Maria sighed. "You should try talking to her, and to your wife. It's good that Samantha goes to see the Wiccans, but they can't solve everything Wesley. 'Don't worry about it.', Damien replied.'I have all the time in the world.'

Following Maria into her home he took a seat on the couch."Lilah is always telling me to just work from home. That I'm getting a little too old to be doing field work anymore. So your mom went to dinner with another guy, big deal it's just a business dinner that's all." He assured her.

I smiled at Damien."Thanks, so what did you want to talk about?" He'd asked her out to dinner to discuss business, or so she thought since that was what he'd told her.

Maria looked at him as he sat down on the sofa."Perhaps you should listen to her more often." She said in reguard to Lilah telling him he should work from home. "I understand that you love your job, and that it makes you feel like you're making up for leaving, but you did what you thought was best, and Los Angeles is still standing and doing well even though you left. Being so busy she rarely saw him; except for dinner and bedtime.

'I just wanted to get to know you a little better. I take it to heart that you asked me to join you and I realized that I know nothing about my co-worker.'

"I do listen...it's just that I'm not the only one with a career. If I asked Lilah to work from home she'd look at me like I was crazy. I can't tell you what a refreshing change that is." I sipped some of my wine and had some of my food, after it arrived. It was nice having some that wanted to talk and pay attention to me, other than to ask how work was, or if dinner had been made.

The room dimmed as she closed her eyes. Roger watched as the room transformed in a minute. He was grinning like an idiot when she opened her eyes. Engulfing her in a bear hug she fake wheezed to get him to loosen his grip. Pulling away he ruffled her hair.'Our work is done, the rest is up to Dad.', Sam replied. Pulling into the garage I noticed Lilah and Roger's car was gone. I walked to the button on the wall and pressed it to make the garage door closed. After it touched the concrete ground I strolled into my house. Looking up I wondered if I strolled into the wrong house. I focused on the decorations on the ceiling and I knew it had to be my house. Only Sam could get something on the high ceiling we had. There was a glowing note on the counter.'Don't screw this up Love Sammy and Roger', I read. With a chuckle I looked the scene before me over; dinner, Lilah's favorite wine, and romantic music playing. Shaking my head I made my way upstairs to change into something more appropriate for the atmosphere.
